Campaign to Heal Our Sacred Space

Preserving Our Home. Building Our Future.

For 45 years, Temple Israel Alameda has been a sacred gathering space—spiritually, culturally, and educationally. Now, we’re launching a critical capital campaign to address long-deferred maintenance and ensure our synagogue remains vibrant and welcoming for generations to come.

Your employer may match your gift—even past contributions, such as your dues donation that you’ve already given this year, could be matched. Check with your HR or Employee Benefits Office to find out. If your gift is eligible, please let us know—most companies do not share employee names, and it is important to us that we have the opportunity to directly thank you!

Why Now?

Our building needs care; we can no longer delay. This campaign will:

  1. Ensure safety and structural integrity
  2. Modernize systems for efficiency and accessibility
  3. Create a more inclusive and welcoming environment

Key Projects

Based on expert assessments and community input, we have prioritized the work into two groups:

  • Urgent (Group A): Immediate safety or operational concerns to complete within a year.
  • Important (Group B): Enhancements and general maintenance; possibly two years to accomplish.

Group A - Urgent or Emergency Projects to address by the end of 2026:

  • HVAC system modernization to replace broken unit (approx. $238,000)
  • Replace the leaking flat roof section of the main building (approx. $56,000)

Group B - Important General Maintenance Projects in or around 2027 or 2028:

  • Replace the sloped roof (which was installed in 2001, and a 2024 estimate is $166,000)
  • Clean or replace the sanctuary skylight during sloped roof work (Price TBD)
  • Paint the exterior of both buildings, including replacing any dry rot sills or panels (Price TBD)
  • Replace front fence and side gate - not covered by security grants (approx. $10,000)

These will be phased over 1–3 years based on urgency, feasibility, and permits.

Campaign Goals

We aim to raise $500,000 through:

  • Existing Building Fund
  • 105th Anniversary campaign gifts
  • IRS Employee Retention Tax Credit (already received)
  • Possible interest-free loan from Hebrew Free Loan
  • Employer matches
  • Your generosity!
